HELL
The Grave, Sheol, Hades
Just as the study on heaven, hell also is not the place we were fooled into believing it is.
If hell were a place, or such a thing, it would have it's own word, that describes only hell. But there is no word for it. All of these words for hell describe the grave, a tomb, sepulchre, burial sites, memorial monuments. A pit, a hole. Ruin. Destruction. Corruption.
Hell in the OT is sheol, the grave. Hell in the NT is Hades, the grave.
Psalm 16:10 For You wilt not leave my soul in hell (sheol); neither wilt You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption.
Acts 2:27 Because You wilt not leave my soul in hell (Hades), neither wilt You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption.
They both simply mean the grave.
Genesis 25:11 And it came to pass after the death (H4194) of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.
Genesis 35:20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave (H6900- burial site): that is the pillar of Rachel's grave (H6900- burial site) unto this day.
Genesis 37:35 And all his (Jacob's) sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave (H7585- land of the dead) unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him (Joseph).
Genesis 47:30 But I will lie with my fathers, and you shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their buryingplace (H6900- burial site, grave). And he said, I will do as you hast said.
Genesis 49:30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace (H6913- grave, sepulchre, tomb).
Genesis 50:5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave (H6913- grave, sepulchre, tomb) which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt you bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father, and I will come again.
Exodus 14:11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves (H6913- graves, sepulchres, tombs) in Egypt, hast you taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast you dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?
Numbers 16:30 But if Yahweh make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit (H7585- land of the dead, sheol); then you shall understand that these men have provoked Yahweh.
They weren't buried in a grave. They went into a deep pit. The idea of deeper into the earth is like the idea of Hades. The nether parts of the earth.
16:32 And the earth (ground) opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
Jasher 84:2 And Yahweh was angry with them, and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, with their houses and all belonging to them, and all the men belonging to Korah.
16:33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit (H7585- land of the dead, sheol), and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven (the sky) and earth (the land) to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live:
Deuteronomy 32:22 For a fire is kindled in Mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell (H7585- sheol, land of the dead), and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
Psalm 86:13 For great is your mercy toward me: and you hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. Lowest hell used only 2X.
The lowest hell is the grave, the land of the dead.
Judges 8:32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre (H6913- grave, tomb) of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
1Samuel 2:6 Yahweh killeth, and maketh alive: He bringeth down to the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead), and bringeth up.
When we die, we sleep in the grave (the abode of the dead) until Judgment Day. Then we either are clothed in righteousness (which is what heaven is), or we return to the grave (land of the dead) and sleep forever, which is what destruction is.
2Samuel 22:6 The sorrows (cords) of hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) compassed me about; the snares of death prevented (were before) me;
The threat of death was always around, but David trusted in Yahweh.
1Kings 2:9 Now therefore hold him (Shimei) not guiltless: for you art a wise man, and knowest what you oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring you down to the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) with blood.
Hell is simply the grave. Hell is used to have people fear what hell is instead of fear Yahweh Himself and His judgment for your disobedience.
2Kings 9:28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his sepulchre (H6900- burial site) with his fathers in the city of David.
Job 3:5 Let darkness and the shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead) stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
Job curses the day he was born. The shadow of death is the grave. Deep darkness.
Job 3:22 Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave (H6913- sepulchre, tomb)?
Job 7:9 As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) shall come up no more.
Job 9:31 Yet shalt you plunge me in the ditch (H7845- pit, destruction, grave), and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
Job 17:14 I have said to corruption (H7845- the pit, destruction, grave), Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister.
17:16 They shall go down to the bars of the pit (H7585- sheol, the grave, the land of the dead), when our rest together is in the dust.
The pit, just another poetic word to describe the grave.
Job 18:21 Surely such are the dwellings (H4908- figuratively the grave) of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.
Bildad speaks of the wicked. Their destruction, their remembrance, their death, their everlasting dwelling in the grave.
Job 21:13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead).
Job 26:6 Hell (H7585- Sheol, the land of the dead) is naked before him, and destruction (H11- ruin, a perishing, Hades) hath no covering.
The grave is bare before him.
Destruction is perishing, it has nowhere to hide.
Job 28:20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
28:21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
28:22 Destruction (H11- Ruin) and death (the dead, Hades) say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
28:23 God understandeth the way thereof, and He knoweth the place thereof.
28:24 For He looketh to the ends of the earth (land), and seeth under the whole heaven (sky);
28:25 To make the weight for the winds; and He weigheth the waters by measure.
28:26 When He made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
28:27 Then did He see it, and declare it; He prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28:28 And unto man He said, Behold, the fear of Yahweh, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
Hades is destruction, perishing. Not departing from evil results in the grave (destruction).
Job 30:24 Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave (H1164- in a heap of ruins), though they cry in his destruction.
Job 31:12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction (H11- ruin), and would root out all mine increase.
Job 33:22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave (H7845- pit, destruction, corruption), and his life to the destroyers.
33:28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit (H7845- destruction, grave), and his life shall see the light.
Job 34:22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead), where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
Psalm 5:9 For there is no faithfulness (sincerity) in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness (destruction); their throat is an open sepulchre (H6913- grave, tomb); they flatter with their tongue.
Romans 3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
The words and doctrine of the enemy are the path to the grave and everlasting death.
Psalm 13:3 Consider and hear me, O Yahweh my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death (H4194- in death, state of death, place of death);
Psalm 16:10 For You wilt not leave my soul in hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead, the grave); neither wilt You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption (H7845- the pit of destruction, the grave).
Hell is the land of the dead, the grave.
The Hebrew has pit of destruction where the KJV has corruption. Pit of destruction is closer to the hell concept. Corruption is what gets you there. The pit of destruction is the grave.
Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead), I will fear no evil: for You art with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.
The valley of the grave. We all will die, but Yahweh's law is our comfort. For by following it, we know we will have life.
Psalm 30:3 O Yahweh, You hast brought up my soul from the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead): You hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
So David's soul is in hell in the verse above and here in verse 3 his soul is in the grave? Well which one is it, hell or the grave? It's both, because hell is just another word that simply means the grave.
30:9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit (H7845- destruction, the grave)? Shall the dust praise You? shall it declare Your truth?
Psalm 31:17 Let me not be ashamed (put to shame), O Yahweh; for I have called upon You: let the wicked be ashamed (put to shame), and let them be silent in the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead).
Psalm 49:5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of (those at) my heels shall compass me about?
Those at the heels would be those of the seed of Satan, Genesis 3:15. The Jews.
49:6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
49:7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
49:8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
Hebrew: 8 Because the price of redemption for their life is too costly, so it ceases forever:
49:9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption (H7845- destruction, the grave).
Verse 9 is a question. “Shall he still live forever, and not see the grave?”
49:17 For when he dieth (H4194- state of death, place of death) he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
Psalm 88:10 Wilt You shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise You? Selah.
88:11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave (H6913- tomb, sepulchre, burying place)? or Your faithfulness in destruction (H11- ruin, place of death)?
88:12 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark? and Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
Land of forgetfulness has the connotation of being dead and in the grave.
Psalm 103:4 (Yahweh) Who redeemeth your life from destruction (H7845- the pit, corruption, the grave); who crowneth you with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
The grave is destruction, corruption, everlasting death.
Psalm 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead), and brake their bands (bonds) in sunder.
The bonds are the holds on death. Allegiance (faith) with Christ will break the bonds of death.
Psalm 139:7 Where would I go from Your Spirit? Or where would I flee from Your face?
139:8 If I ascend up into heaven (the sky), You art there: if I make my bed in hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) (the grave), behold, You art there.
When we are righteous His angels watch over us in the grave until the day of Judgment.
Proverbs 15:11 Hell (H7585- Sheol, the land of the dead) and destruction (H11- ruin, perishing) are before Yahweh: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?
Proverbs 7:27 Her house is the way to hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead, where the wicked are sent for punishment), going down to the chambers of death.
Talking about going after a strange woman (of another race). This is the way to death and the grave, and ultimate destruction.
Proverbs 11:4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death (H4194- realm of the dead).
Proverbs 15:11 Hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) and destruction (H11- ruin, Hades, place of perishing) are before Yahweh: how much more then the hearts of the children of men (Adam)?
Hell is the grave and destruction is perishing.
Proverbs 23:14 You shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead).
Withhold not correction from disobedient children. Here hell would be the second death. Teach obedience.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever your hand findeth to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead), whither you goest.
Chapter 9 is about making the best of this life, because once we die our fate awaits when we are resurrected for judgment at Judgment Day.
Isaiah 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead), upon them hath the light shined.
The light of the gospel.
Matthew 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
Ephesians 5:8 For you were sometimes darkness, but now are you light in the Prince: walk as children of light:
5:14 Wherefore He saith, Awake you that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.
Awake from this unrighteous society and false doctrine and live.
Isaiah 14:15 Yet you (Babylon) shalt be brought down to hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead), to the sides of the pit (H953- well, cistern, especially one used as a prison).
The doom of Babylon.
The Septuagint ends as: “...even to the foundations of the earth.” So in verse 15 hell would be Hades, which is the nether parts, deep. An emphatic way of explaining -so deep, unable to return.
Isaiah 14:20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial (H6900- burial site), because you hast destroyed your land, and slain your people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.
Isaiah 25:8 He will swallow up death (H4194- state of death) in victory; and Yahweh GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for Yahweh hath spoken.
Isaiah 28:15 Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
The overflowing scourge would be the Assyrian invasion and deportation of the northern house of Isreal.
Isaiah 65:2 I have spread out My hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;
Romans 10:21 But to Israel He saith, All day long I have stretched forth My hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
65:3 A people that provoketh Me to anger continually to My face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; (to devils, which exist not)
Deuteronomy 32:21 They have moved Me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked Me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.
65:4 Which remain among the graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs), and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;
Jeremiah 2:6 Neither said they, Where is Yahweh that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death (H6757- calamity, deep darkness, place of the dead), through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?
Jeremiah 8:1 At that time, saith Yahweh, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs):
8:2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
2Kings 23:5 And he (Josiah) put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
Our ancestors chose to worship pagan gods, no different than today's “churches” worshiping a Jewish Jesus.
8:3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith Yahweh of hosts.
This should be a lesson of what happens when we get to the point when we have lived wickedly for generations and the latter ones only know wickedness. Just like today.
Job 7:15 So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life.
7:16 I loathe it; I would not live alway: let me alone; for my days are vanity.
Revelation 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
8:4 Moreover you shalt say unto them, Thus saith Yahweh; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
8:5 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
8:6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
They were so habitually wicked, it was all they knew and practiced.
2Peter 3:9 The Prince is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Live for Prince Yahshua by obedience, or die for sin and perish in the grave.
Jeremiah 13:16 Give glory to Yahweh your God, before He cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while you look for light, He turn it into the shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead), and make it gross darkness.
The parable of the girdle. This chapter is about race mixing, and the result is darkness. Everlasting death.
Jeremiah 18:23 Yet, Yahweh, You knowest all their counsel against me to slay (H4194- death by violence as a penalty) me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from Your sight, but let them be overthrown before You; deal thus with them in the time of Your anger.
Jeremiah 21:8 And unto this people you shalt say, Thus saith Yahweh; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death (H4194- the dead, pestilence, ruin).
Ezekiel 19:4 The nations also heard of him (Joseph); he was taken in their pit (H7845- pit for catching, corruption), and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt.
Here the pit means just that, a pit, a ditch, a hole.
Ezekiel 32:26 There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves (H6913- burial sites) are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.
32:27 And they (Meshech and Tubal) shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised (the Babylonians), which are gone down to hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
Ezekiel 37:12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith Yahweh GOD; Behold, O My people, I will open your graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs), and cause you to come up out of your graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs), and bring you into the land of Israel.
37:13 And you shall know that I am Yahweh, when I have opened your graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs), O My people, and brought you up out of your graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs),
This is not the resurrection. This is an awakening of the true knowledge and understanding of who we are and whose we are.
The land of Israel is the lands in which the children of Israel dwell. In the OT it was the land of Judah, the promised land. In the NT and today, it is the white nations of the world.
Ezekiel 39:11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves (H6913- sepulchres, tombs) in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
39:12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
39:13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith Yahweh GOD.
The valley of Hamongog is a reference to the multitude of Gog. Gog are the people of the synagogue of Satan, the Jews. They are now living in Palestine, which they officially stole in 1948. When Christ returns, a great portion of the slaughter will be there.
When Christ was murdered by the Jews, His blood was spilled and the land has been defiled ever since. When Christ returns, He will have His revenge and the land will be cleansed.
Hades is the same thing as the grave, the pit, death, the state of death. Paul describes it as a type of sleep. Those that are dead and those that will die before Christ's return are in a state of sleep, awaiting Judgment Day.
Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead, the pit); I will redeem them from death (H4194- the dead, pestilence, ruin): O death (H4194- the dead, pestilence, ruin), I will be your plagues; O grave (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead), I will be your destruction: repentance (vengeance) shall be hid from Mine eyes.
Where the King James version has repentance, the NAS has compassion, and the Septuagint Greek consolation (comfort). The Hebrew has vengeance, in the sense of, to ease oneself by taking vengeance upon an enemy (Isa 1:54, 57:6). However here the subject is not Israel, but death and the grave. This too, is both a Messianic prophecy and a promise of restoration to the obedient of Israel.
1Corinthians 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
Hosea is an immediate prophecy concerning ancient Israel, and its destruction at the hands of the Assyrians.
Amos 5:8 Seek Him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death (H6757- deep darkness, place of the dead) into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: Yahweh is His name:
Many people confuse God with Nature. Here we see that God is not merely Nature, but that He is indeed a being, a personality, which transcends Nature.
Orion is also mentioned in the Book of Job, along with others of the constellations, at Job 9:9 and 38:31.
Amos 9:2 Though they dig into hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead) (the grave), thence shall Mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven (the sky), thence will I bring them down:
There is no escaping the judgment of Yahweh, and He will punish even those taken captive, if it is their destiny to be punished so, which had already been determined by the plumbline in the vision of Amos chapter 7. Those that are already dead will still get judgment.
Jonah 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto Yahweh, and He heard me; out of the belly (H990- figuratively depth of Sheol) of hell (H7585- sheol, pit) cried I, and You heardest my voice.
So was Jonah in hell or the belly of the whale?
Jonah 2:6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast You brought up my life from corruption (H7845- the pit, destruction, the grave), O Yahweh my God.
Jonah was in the belly of the whale. Jonah did not want to do what Yahweh told him to do. When we disobey, we are headed for corruption, the pit, the grave.
Nahum 1:14 And Yahweh hath given a commandment concerning you, that no more of your name be sown: out of the house of your gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make your grave (H6913- sepulchres, tombs); for you art vile.
1:15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep your solemn feasts, perform your vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through you; he is utterly cut off.
The reference to the wicked who “shall no more pass through you” is not a reference to sinful people, although it may be prophetic of that if Judah had indeed repented and continued in the ways of Yahweh their God. But in the immediate context here it must be a reference to the Assyrians themselves, who in the opening of this prophecy were explicitly called the adversaries and enemies of Yahweh.
Habakkuk 2:5 Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell (H7585- sheol, the land of the dead), and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
It must not be forgotten that in verse 11 of Habakkuk chapter 1 that the first offense of the Chaldaeans was to impute their power to their own god, which is an idol, when their power had actually come from the God of Israel, as they were raised up only to be a scourge for Israel.
Here in verse 5 we have further reference to the injustice and pride of the Chaldaeans, and as they are successful in conquering nations that their thirst for conquest would not be satisfied. Therefore they are portrayed as having heaped unto themselves all nations and people. This is the same attitude reflected in Nebuchadnezzar's own inscriptions
Hades is the state in which all the dead exist. In the New Testament a descent to Hades may simply refer to someone's death and disembodied existence. In this sense even Jesus enters Hades.
Following David's prophecy in Psalm 16:10 For You wilt not leave my soul in hell (H7585 sheol, the grave, the pit); neither wilt You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption. , Peter interprets the resurrection as God delivering Jesus from Hades (death). Acts 2:27 Because You wilt not leave my soul in hell (G86- Hades, the grave), neither wilt You suffer Your Holy One to see corruption. And Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that His soul was not left in hell (G86- Hades, the grave), neither His flesh did see corruption.
Similarly, Jesus prophesies that the Son of Man will be delivered from the heart of the earth, just as God delivered Jonah from Hades. Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. In both instances, Hades refers to a disembodied existence.
The term "hell" in the New Testament is generally from the word "gehenna", which is a variation on the Valley of the Sons of Hinnom. This was a valley outside the walls of Jerusalem where, in the years shortly before the Babylonian captivity, some people burned their children to "Molech", the King of the gods. It later became a city dump, and fires were constantly breaking out there.
Matthew 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell (G1067- fire of Gehinnom) fire.
Murder will receive judgment. Anger without a cause toward your brethren is worse.
You will burn just like the trash in the dump of Hinnom.
Matthew 5:29 And if your right eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell (G1067- fire of Gehinnom).
5:30 And if your right hand offend you, cut it off, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell (G1067- fire of Gehinnom).
We don't have to sever our body parts, but we can sever the practices and cooperation with the evil things of society. We can avoid burning like the trash in the fires of Hinnom.
Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (G1067- fire of Gehinnom).
Hell is everlasting punishment. Hell is the grave, dead, without Yahweh, ruin. Everlasting death.
Brenton's Septuagint 4 Maccabees 13:12-17, which while we may or may not accept the book as canon, it nevertheless reflects the attitudes that Christ also professes here: “12 And another, Remember of what stock you are; and by the hand of our father Isaac endured to be slain for the sake of piety. 13 And one and all, looking on each other serene and confident, said, Let us sacrifice with all our heart our souls to God who gave them, and employ our bodies for the keeping of the law. 14 Let us not fear him who thinketh he killeth; 15 for great is the trial of soul and danger of eternal torment laid up for those who transgress the commandment of God. 16 Let us arm ourselves, therefore, in the abnegation of the divine reasoning. 17 If we suffer thus, Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob will receive us, and all the fathers will commend us.” The book, 4 Maccabees, is a moral one, about the power of faith over fleshly desire, and the story here is about seven brethren and their father who chose death over violation of the law at the command of Antiochus, the Greek ruler of Syria.
Matthew 11:23 And you, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell (G86- Hades, the grave): for if the mighty works, which have been done in you, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto you, That you art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My assembly; and the gates of hell (G86- Hades, the grave) shall not prevail against it.
The Greek reads more accurate.
18 And I say to you that you are a stone (petros), yet upon this bedrock (petra) shall I build My assembly and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it!
Death and the grave will not prevail. We stones that make up the building that is the truth, knowledge and understanding of Christ in obedience will not be left dead in the grave.
Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell (G1067- son of Gehinnom) than yourselves.
Hell is everlasting punishment. Everlasting death. Never in the presence of Yahweh ever.
Christ is speaking to the Edomite Jew Pharisees. He is scolding them because they teach their own version of the laws of Moses, which is Judaism (and the doctrine of today's “churches”), and when a true Israelite follows this false doctrine they are in the same category as the Jews. The Jews are the children of the Devil (hell), and their fate is clearly stated throughout scripture and specifically in Obadiah. The fate of the cursed seed and it's followers are everlasting death.
Matthew 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like unto whited sepulchres (G5028- tombs), which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
The Jews can have a form or appearance of godliness, but within are full of dead men's bones.
Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you build the tombs (G5028- sepulchres) of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres (G3419- memorial monuments) of the righteous,
23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31 Wherefore you be witnesses unto yourselves, that you are the children of them which killed the prophets.
23:32 Fill you up then the measure of your fathers.
23:33 Ye serpents, you generation (race) of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell (G1067- the fire of Gehinnom)?
This is Christ speaking directly to the children of the Devil, the Jews. Their only fate is death.
The Jews are referred to by Christ as a race of vipers. They cannot escape their fate.
Christ calls His people sheep.
Cain and Esau's descendants are the race of vipers. Jacob/Israel's descendants are the sheep.
Matthew 27:52 And the graves (G3419- sepulchres, tombs, place of interment) were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Matthew 27:60 And laid it in his (Joseph's) own new tomb (G3419- grave, sepulchre, place of interment), which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre (G3419- tomb, place of interment), and departed.
27:61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre (G5028- tomb).
27:64 Command therefore that the sepulchre (G5028- tomb) be made sure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night, and steal Him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
27:65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch (guards): go your way, make it as sure as you can.
Pilate still demanded that the evil Jew priesthood handle their own business.
27:66 So they went, and made the sepulchre (G5028- tomb) sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre (G5028- tomb).
Mark 5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs (G3418- grave, sepulchre, tomb), crying, and cutting himself with stones.
Mark 9:43 And if your hand offend (entrap) you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell (G1067- Gehinnom), into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Isaiah 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against Me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
9:45 And if your foot offend (entrap) you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell (G1067- Gehinnom), into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
9:47 And if your eye offend (entrap) you, pluck it out: it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell (G1067- the fire of Gehinnom) fire:
9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
These are metaphors, and simply mean that the evil dead will remain dead.
Luke 8:27 And when He went forth to land, there met Him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs (G3418- sepulchres).
Luke 11:44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are as graves (G3419- sepulchres, tombs) which appear not (unseen), and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
Psalm 5:9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
Luke 11:47 Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchres (G3419- monuments, tombs) of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
11:48 Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchres.
11:49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
11:50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation (race);
11:51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation (race).
Christ was talking to the Jew Pharisees. Cain was the first Jew and murdered Abel, the son of Adam. Throughout our history the descendants of Cain and of Esau killed the descendants of Adam and of Jacob. These are the 2 seedlines of Genesis 3:15. The children of the Devil and the children of Yahweh. That's why Christ told the Jews that the blood of our people will be required of the serpent race.
Luke 16:23 And in hell (G86- Hades, the grave) he lift up his eyes, being in torments (G931), and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Hades is the place where the wicked dead reside and are punished. In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man experiences torment in Hades. This is the intermediate state, for the bodily resurrection and the final judgment are still future. Jesus' point is that Hades foreshadows the rich man's final judgment. Similarly, Lazarus rests at Abraham's side, connoting the joyous abode of the righteous dead.
Torments comes from basanos, G931. Perhaps remotely from the same as G939 (through the notion of going to the bottom).
Luke 23:53 And he (Joseph) took it down (the body of Christ), and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre (G3418- grave, tomb) that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
Luke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre (G3418- grave, tomb), bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
24:2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre (G3419- tomb).
John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves (G3419- sepulchres, tombs, place of interment) shall hear His voice,
5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation (judgment).
The judgment will be death, everlasting.
Acts 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre (G3418- grave, tomb) is with us unto this day.
Acts 7:16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre (G3418- grave, tomb) that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
Acts 13:29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of Him, they took Him down from the tree, and laid Him in a sepulchre (G3419- tombs, place of interment).

Psalm 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
Lairs and deceivers, false prophets and preachers. When they teach false doctrine their words are poison and invite destruction and death. Everlasting death. Choose this day whom you will serve, the doctrine of the “churches” or the doctrine of scripture. One leads to the grave, one leads to the kingdom of righteousness.
1Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is your sting? O grave (G86- Hades, the grave, death), where is your victory?
15:56 The sting of death is sin (guilt); and the strength (power) of sin (guilt) is the law.
Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Prince. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Ephesians 4:9 (Now that He ascended, what is it but that He also descended first into the lower (G2737- locally of Hades) parts of the earth?
4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens (skies), that He might fill (fulfill) all things.)
John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Hades is just a word that is used for the lower parts of the earth. The grave. Christ died as a man and went to the land of the disembodied dead, the grave.
Heaven is just another word for the skies or righteousness, depending on context.
James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell (G1067- Gehinnom).
Proverbs 16:27 An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.
Matthew 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Luke 12:49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?
Our God is a consuming fire. The fire will come upon the earth. Hell is everlasting punishment, which is death.
2Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell (G5020- held captive in the deepest abyss of Hades called Tartaros), and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
Job 4:17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18 Behold, He put no trust in His servants; and His angels He charged with folly:
Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
All the angels that sinned, and all the seed of Adam will be judged. The ones that pass will have life in the kingdom of righteousness, the ones that fail will have everlasting death.
Thayer Definition: the name of the subterranean region, doleful and dark, regarded by the ancient Greeks as the abode of the wicked dead, where they suffer punishment for their evil deeds.
Revelation 1:18 I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell (G86- Hades, the grave) and of death.
Romans 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over Him.

This color (pale) represents sickness and decay.
The plagues and diseases from conditions of the 2nd and 3rd seals.
The sickness and decay of the Roman empire under the burdens of race-mixing, vice, and political corruption finally begin its decline, where it finally succumbs to Germanic invaders in the fifth century AD. There was a fifty-year crisis in which there were prolonged periods of virtual anarchy, from about 235-284 AD, a period which the empire barely survived. But the disease which finally kills the empire is now terminal, and it is only a matter of time before its death.
-1/4 killed by sword is when the German tribes (Scythians) and 4 tribes of Alemania (2 Gothic, Visigoths and Ostrogoths) made their push of migration.
Revelation 11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves (G3418- sepulchres, tombs).
Revelation 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell (G86- Hades, the grave) delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
20:14 And death and hell (G86- Hades, the grave) were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
